BiographyStephen Johnston, GAC President 2010-2011Stephen Johnston was raised in Ontario, surrounded by the featureless red clays of the Lake Ontario basin. This was one of many reasons that he committed himself to leaving Ontario as soon as was possible. He headed off to McGill for his undergraduate degree, and then on to the University of Alberta for his M.Sc. and Ph.D. Since then he has worked as an exploration geologist for Shell, as a project geologist with the Yukon Geological Survey and as a Professor at the University of Durban-Westville in South Africa. He has been a Professor at the University of Victoria since 1999, where he continues his research on mountain belts, including the Cordillera of western North America, and the Variscan of western Europe. | |
