Ph.D. positions in Barcelona
Institute of Earth Sciences “Jaume Almera”, CSIC
The group of Earth Structure and Dynamics at the Institute of Earth Sciences “Jaume Almera”, CSIC, in Barcelona (http://www.ija.csic.es) is looking to fill three Ph.D. positions in Geophysics. The studentships are for four years and the degree will be granted by the University of Barcelona.
Position 1: High-resolution geophysical imaging of active fault systems in Taiwan
We are looking for a Ph.D. student to work on geophysical studies within our research projects in Taiwan. The Ph.D. will be co-directed by Drs. Dennis Brown and Martin Schimmel. The methodologies to be applied include high-resolution seismic tomography, migration studies, and petrophysical modeling of the crust to obtain high-resolution images of active fault systems in the Taiwan Orogen. These data will be integrated with new surface geological observations currently being carried out in Taiwan by our group. The student should have a degree (or anticipated by the end of this academic year) in geophysics/geology or physics and a good knowledge of English. The student will be expected to work in close relationship with the Seismological Laboratory (http://seismology.gl.ntu.edu.tw/main.htm) of Prof. Yih-Min Wu at the Department of Earth Sciences at the Taiwan National University in Taipei. Several extended stays in Taiwan are expected.
Interested persons should contact either Dennis Brown or Martin Schimmel at the following addresses: e-mail: dbrown@ictja.csic.es or schimmel@ictja.csic.es
Position 2: Seismic structure of the crust beneath the Rif Cordillera
We are also looking for a Ph.D. student to work on the characterization of the crustal structure in the Northern part of Morocco, especially beneath the Rif Cordillera, based on the acquisition of new wide-angle seismic profiles and on the integration of these data with the various seismic datasets currently available. The Ph.D. is linked to the RIFSIS project and will be directed by Prof. J. Gallart. The student should have a degree in geophysics/geology or physics and is expected to participate in field work in Morocco. The large amount of high density data anticipated from the RIFSIS experiment will allow us to build models of the internal distribution of seismic velocities that document the crustal structure and its lateral variations. The student will benefit from the integration of all the seismic information available coming from both currently active projects such as SIMA (Active Seismics in the Atlas), SIBERIA (passive seismics in South-North Morocco) and TOPOIPERIA (multidisciplinary studies and networks covering the whole Iberian Peninsula, http://www.ija.csic.es/gt/rc/LSD/PRJ/indexTOPOIBERIA.html), and previous projects (ESCI-Betics-Alboran, seimic refraction in Betics, etc.). The results of RIFSIS are important for constraining any evolutionary model of the complex interaction between the European and the African plates, since it will cover the present lack of data on the architecture of the crust in the southern flank of the collision zone.
Interested persons should contact J. Gallart: jgallart@ictja.csic.es
Position 3: The nature of lithospheric-mantle beneath Alpine orogenic belts: A comparison between Atlas, Zagros and Tibet from numerical approaches
We are furthermore looking for a Ph.D. student to study the present lithospheric structure of three anomalous regions along the Alpine-Himalayan belt: The Atlas, Tibet and the Zagros mountains. Although these three zones have a different geological history, with continental collision in the Himalaya and Zagros, and intra plate tectonic inversion in the Atlas, they show similar unusual characteristics: low seismic velocities, basic volcanism, an important dynamic topography component, and subcrustal mass deficit attributed to thinning of the lithospheric mantle. With this project we aim to revise critically the mantle characteristics, the mineralogical composition, and its effect on density, and quantify the thickness variations of the three belts. To this end, we will use a combination of numerical techniques which integrate potential field equations (gravity and geoid) with isostatic (elevation), thermal (heat flow and temperature distribution), and petrophysical models.
The candidate: The candidate will apply existing numerical models that combine potential field equations with isostatic, thermal and petrophysical models. This technique will permit to characterize the upper mantle beneath one of these orogens, to contrast with the seismic velocities predicted by the tomography and to evaluate the possible geodynamic processes that caused the actual situation. Basic knowledge of computer programming, petrology and tectonophysics will be positively valued.
Interested persons should contact Ivone Jiménez-Munt and Manel Fernàndez

Research Associate, Sedimentary Research Group
Dalhousie University
The Dalhousie University Sedimentary Research Group invites applications from qualified individuals to undertake research in the field of fluvial and vegetation analysis.
The Sedimentary Research Group, in collaboration with scientists at several institutions in Canada and overseas, will undertake a five-year study funded by the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC). The purpose of the study is to investigate the effects of vegetation on river systems at key times in geological history, especially during the Paleozoic era when plants first colonized terrestrial surfaces and during times of major vegetation change during the Cenozoic.
The position involves compilation of large amounts of scientific literature dealing with river deposits in the geological record. This will be followed by analysis and semi-quantitative presentation of trends displayed by the recorded data. The scientific drafting of visuals will support the analysis. This phase of study will be followed by fieldwork at important bedrock sites selected from the literature analysis, to document the fluvial sedimentology and vegetation record of the strata. The fieldwork will involve measurement of detailed sections and sample collection, in order to test whether there were detectable changes in river systems that correlate with important stages in the evolution and abundance of land plants. Writing of scientific papers and conference presentations will follow the lab and field work. The successful applicant will be co-leader of the team, with responsibility for assisting in supervision of graduate and undergraduate thesis students.
Required qualifications are: 1) Ph.D. in fluvial sedimentology and stratigraphy, and preferably post-doctoral experience, with particular interest in Paleozoic stratal systems; 2) experience in paleobiology, preferably in paleobotany and trace fossils; 3) field experience in sedimentary geology; 4) research accomplishments in sedimentary disciplines, evidenced by publications; 5) skill in scientific drafting and in working with computer software; and 6) record of successful participation in team research.
The position is advertised initially for 2 years, at the Research Associate level (requiring Ph.D. and preferably previous post-doctoral fellowship experience), with salary up to $ Can. 44,000/yr, plus benefits. The starting date is 1st October 2009, or by arrangement.
Applications to: Martin Gibling, Department of Earth Sciences, Dalhousie University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada B3H 3J5, Tel. (902) 494-2358, Fax (902) 494-6889, E-mail mgibling@dal.ca. Two PhD Research Positions on the Sudbury Structure
Laurentian University
Department of Earth Sciences
PhD Research Position 1
Structural, Metamorphic, and Geochronological Evolution of the South Range of the Sudbury
Impact Structure
The South Range of the Sudbury impact structure has been affected by several orogenic events, punctuated by the catastrophic Sudbury meteorite impact event. These events displaced and folded supracrustal rocks of the Paleoproterozoic Huronian Supergroup in the South Range of the impact structure. The ca. 1850 Ma Sudbury Igneous Complex, which is interpreted as an impact melt sheet, was deformed during post-impact orogenic events. Understanding the tectonic history of the South Range is important because Ni-Cu-PGE deposits, which formed during the emplacement and cooling of the Sudbury Igneous Complex, were deformed and their metals were remobilized during post-impact orogenies. The project will involve: (1) mapping of structures and metamorphic fabric overprinting relationships to resolve the sequence of structural and metamorphic events that affected the South Range, (2) estimations of pressures and temperatures during these events using applied phase equilibria modelling and calibrated geothermobarometers, (3) resolution of the timing of these orogenic events by U-Pb radiogenic dating of suitable material, and (4) analysis and interpretation of the major and trace element geochemistry of intrusions and volcanic rocks to constraint their tectonic environment. This data will be integrated to produce a 4D interpretation of the tectonic evolution of the South Range before and after the Sudbury impact event.
This study will prepare the student well for a future career in academia, government surveys, and mineral exploration and mining industry. The research will be conducted at Laurentian University under the supervision of Dr. Doug Tinkham and Dr. Bruno Lafrance. The project is fully funded through a research grant from the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation. Preference will be given to candidates with strong backgrounds in metamorphic petrology and/or structural geology. The project includes a stipend that will cover tuition fees and all living expenses. The funding is in place and the project will begin in May 2009.
Applications, including Curriculum Vitae, Academic Transcripts, a Statement of Research Background and Interests, and names of 3 academic references should be sent to Drs. Doug Tinkham and Bruno Lafrance. Applications will be reviewed during the last week of February 2009, but the positions will remain open until suitable candidates are found.

PhD Research Position 2
Evolution of the Sudbury Igneous Complex Contact Metamorphic Aureole
and Controls on Anatexis
The 1850 Ma Sudbury Structure is one of the world’s largest, oldest, and best preserved meteorite impact site, and it hosts one of the world’s largest Ni-Cu-PGE camps. The contact metamorphic aureole to the Sudbury Igneous Complex (SIC) contains greenschist to local granulite facies assemblages with evidence of local anatexis in the highest temperature portion of the aureole and local regional metamorphic overprints. Contact and footwall Ni-Cu-PGE ores are clearly associated with anatexis and breccias, but the controls on the location, amount, segregation, mobility, and fluid content of the anatectic melts are poorly understood. Understanding the anatectic melts is important because they represent an important sink and source of high-temperature fluid, because they are an important indicator of the magmatic and metamorphic state of the contact aureole, and because they will substantially affect the mobility of sulfide melts and metamorphic-hydrothermal fluids. This study focuses on defining the evolution of the contact aureole and will characterize the occurrence and nature of partial melting in relation to host-rock lithology, host-rock textures, and pre-existing fabrics (e.g., cataclastic vs. non-cataclastic host) that could enhance the production, segregation, and mobilization of silicate melts. This project will also address the nature of regional metamorphic overprints on the aureole to allow a detailed understanding of the metamorphic evolution of the contact aureole and possible relations to mineralization. The candidate will conduct field mapping and fabric analysis, mineral and whole-rock geochemical investigations, isotopic and geochronological analysis, and phase equilibria modelling to constrain the P-T-X-t evolution of individual samples.
This PhD project will be conducted at Laurentian University under the supervision of Dr. Doug Tinkham and Dr. Michael Lesher, and is fully funded by industry through the Centre for Excellence in Mining Innovation. The funding includes a stipend that will cover tuition fees and living expenses. A full suite of sample preparation and analytical facilities are available through the Department of Earth Sciences (DES) and the Ontario Geological Survey geological laboratories housed in the same building as the DES. The project will begin in May 2009.
Applications, including Curriculum Vitae, Academic Transcripts, a Statement of Research Background and Interests, and names of 3 academic references should be sent to Dr. Doug Tinkham or Dr. Michael Lesher. Applications will be reviewed during the last week of February 2009, but the positions will remain open until suitable candidates are found.
